Meet Monkeys! Feed Monkeys!!
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama is home to a troop of about 120 wild Japanese monkeys. It is located in the Arashiyama area, a famous sightseeing spot in Kyoto.
Each monkey has its own name, and maternal family histories as well as birth years have been meticulously recorded since the park opened in 1958.
All monkeys are fed by people, and they remain completely wild—not tamed. To preserve the monkeys’ wild nature and to avoid problems between monkeys and visitors, the park asks for your agreement on-site, so please follow the rules to enjoy your visit.
Monkey Information:
- Adult body length ranges from about 80 cm to 95 cm.
- Males are generally larger than females.
- Body weights are checked annually in February.
The Japanese macaque is omnivorous, meaning it will eat just about anything—fruit, flowers, seeds, buds, roots, leaves, fungi, and cereals.
At the park, the troop is fed wheat, soybeans, chestnuts, peanuts, apples, bananas, sweet potatoes, and Japanese persimmons.
You can see monkeys at many zoos, but the Arashiyama monkeys are especially fascinating—and very cute.
Why not visit and feed them? You may even spot baby monkeys.
