Banshoyama Park (Banshoyama Kōen)
At Banshoyama Park, you can enjoy superb scenery and a rich natural environment, with views toward Engetsutō Islet and Tojima (Tower Island), both within Yoshino-Kumano National Park.
This nature park is a short walk from the Rinkai stop on the Meikō Bus town loop. Located at the southern edge of Tanabe Bay, the park features three lookouts offering views of Engetsu and Tojima Islands. Because the park once housed a botanical garden and a zoo, some unusual flora and fauna can still be found today. In summer and autumn, you may even spot the oyadokari hermit crab, a protected species designated as a Natural Monument.
The grounds are also home to the Minakata Kumagusu Museum, which exhibits documents and other materials related to Minakata Kumagusu, a Wakayama native renowned for his scholarship in natural history and folklore. Enjoy a blend of nature and history, along with the park’s zodiac carvings.
