Fuji Shibazakura Festival

Each spring, some 800,000 shibazakura (pink moss) blossoms carpet the foothills of Mount Fuji — one of the largest displays near Tokyo, and a breathtaking seasonal escape.

Journal

Each spring, the foothills of Mount Fuji are transformed into a sea of colour as the shibazakura — pink moss — comes into full bloom. Held at the Fuji Motosuko Resort, the Shibazakura Festival is one of the great seasonal sights of the Fuji Five Lakes region.

When and where

  • Where: Fuji Motosuko Resort — 212 Motosu, Fujikawaguchiko, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi
  • When: mid-April to late May (dates vary each year with the bloom)
  • Hours: 8:00 – 17:00

The panorama

Several varieties of shibazakura bloom together across the slopes, with some 800,000 flowers spreading over the hillside. Set against the backdrop of Mount Fuji, the carpet of pink, white and lavender is among the largest displays of its kind near the Tokyo area — and lasts for roughly a month and a half at the turn of the season.

Yamafuji sweets café

During the festival the resort also hosts a café where visitors can pause for snacks, sweets and drinks while taking in the view of Mount Fuji.
