Bessho Sasa is a hot spring Japanese-style inn located on the 4th and 5th floors of Hotel Kaneyamaen in Fujiyoshida. This ryokan is an ideal family-friendly onsen ryokan thanks to its kid- and family-friendly facilities and convenient location. It is also best known for the dynamic views of Mount Fuji from the open-air bath in each guest room.

Location

Yamanashi Prefecture is easily reachable from Tokyo—it takes only 2 hours to travel to. Getting around Yamanashi-ken feels like a world away from the bustle of the capital. Yamanashi is more than a place to enjoy views of Japan’s icon, Mount Fuji; it is also a perfect destination to visit and discover the true beauty of the country. This nature-rich area is home to the picturesque Fuji Five Lakes, historical shrines and temples, as well as some remarkable hot spring spots.

Rooms

Fujisan Onsen Bessho SASA offers 17 rooms and completed a renovation in June 2014. There are three room types: Mizuho, Fukuchi, and Asumi.

  • Mizuho and Asumi are ideal for those who want a private, relaxed atmosphere for 2 to 3 people.
  • Fukuchi is a larger space with a capacity of 5 people, plus a decked terrace with a wide, open feel.

All accommodations feature a separate living room and are equipped with an open-air bath, with views of Mount Fuji.

Dining

Fuji Onsen Bessho Sasa offers breakfast in three settings: in-room, hall, and dining room. For dinner, enjoy dishes made with seasonal ingredients prepared by professional chefs. You can savor meals unique to the area where you can dine with views of Mount Fuji, including dishes using local specialties and rare ingredients.

Onsen

Fuji Onsen Bessho Sasa is famous for its “Fuji Onsen,” with a pH of 10.3, one of the highest in Japan. Enjoying this highly alkaline hot spring not only helps restore your health balance, but also removes dirt and keratin from your skin, leaving it smooth and beautiful.

Public onsen services include an indoor mineral hot spring (Japanese-style onsen) and a yukata (Japanese robe). Facilities are separated for men and women.

Oshi Residence, also known as the Former Togawa Family House, was built in 1768. It is designated as a national important cultural asset, and also a Mt. Fuji World Cultural Heritage Site Asset.

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen-jinja Shrine (4 km)

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen-jinja Shrine is located in southeastern Yamanashi near the border of Shizuoka. Ancient stone lanterns lead to a massive shrine gate and the main building, surrounded by thousand-year-old trees.

Fuji-Q Highland is one of Japan’s must-visit amusement parks, located in the Fuji Five Lake region at the foot of Mount Fuji. It is famous for its thrilling, record-breaking roller coasters and the Haunted Hospital, the world’s first and largest haunted attraction.

Fujiyama Museum (5 km)

Built by Fuji Kyuko Co. Ltd. and the Horiuchi Koankai Foundation, the Fujiyama Museum was completed in July 2013. It offers intimate experiences with nature and art, and holds a large collection of masterpieces that capture Mt. Fuji from the perspectives of modern and contemporary artists. Visitors can learn about Mt. Fuji’s rich natural beauty as Japan’s natural asset through artworks and educational activities.

Fujiyama Onsen (5.4 km)

Right next to Fuji-Q Highland is Fujiyama Onsen, a modern hot spring facility. The bathhouse features beautifully traditional wooden baths and offers both indoor and outdoor baths, segregated by gender.

Mt. Fuji Panorama Ropeway (7 km)

The Mount Fuji Panoramic Ropeway ascends 400 meters from the eastern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko to an observation deck near the peak of Mount Tenjo. From the deck—more than 1000 meters above sea level—you can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Kawaguchiko below and Mount Fuji.

Besides taking the ropeway, hiking is another option for the descent. It takes about 30 minutes from the observation deck down the forested mountain slope. A different trail leads to a small shrine 300 meters uphill at the summit of Mount Tenjo. From there, the trail continues on to Mount Mitsutoge, a popular day hike with good views of Mount Fuji.

Lake Kawaguchiko (10 km)

Lake Kawaguchiko is the most easily accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes, with train and direct bus connections to Tokyo. Located at the base of Mount Fuji, the best views can be enjoyed from the lake’s northern shores. It is a memorable place to visit during cherry blossom season around April, or in early November, when autumn begins and maple trees line the road.

Kawaguchi Asama Shrine (9.2 km)

Kawaguchi Asama Shrine is one of approximately 1,300 Asama shrines in Japan that enshrine the deity of volcanoes in general and Mount Fuji in particular. The shrine is part of the Mt. Fuji UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, designated in 2013.

Lake Saiko (17 km)

Lake Saiko is the second smallest of the Fuji Five Lakes, with a maximum depth of 71.7 meters, the second deepest among the five lakes. It is surrounded by steep, wooded slopes on all sides, and Mount Fuji is visible only from the westernmost tip of the lake.
