Kirifuri Falls (霧降の滝, Kirifuri no taki) is an impressive, 75-meter-high, two-tiered waterfall located below the Kirifuri Highlands, a few kilometers northeast of the temples and shrines of Nikko. The elegant cascade offers a beautiful contrast to the surrounding foliage—lush and green in spring and summer, and turning vivid shades of red, orange, and gold in autumn.
The name Kirifuri means “falling mist,” referring to the fine spray created when the water crashes onto the rocks at the base of the lower falls. At times, the view may be partially obscured when mist or fog settles into the valley. It was once possible to hike down to the base of the waterfall, but the mountain trail partially collapsed several years ago and has remained closed since.
Today, the falls are best enjoyed from a wooden observation deck built high on the mountainside across the valley. The deck is about a 10-minute walk downhill from the parking lot and bus stop along a mostly paved path. Near the parking lot and bus stop, you will also find two restaurants and public toilets. Autumn colors in the area are usually at their best from late October to early November.
