Koyasan Onsen Fukuchiin (Kōyasan Shukubō Fukuchiin)

Close to the landmark Kongōbu-ji Buddhist temple on Mount Kōya stands this elegant 13th-century temple, offering guest rooms and ornate gardens. Fukuchiin, founded by Daishi Kūkai in the 7th year of Kōnin (816 AD), is a shukubō (temple lodging). This accommodation is for Buddhist temple pilgrims and tourists.

A shukubō differs from standard ryokan or hotels: guests stay within the temple grounds and immerse themselves in the spirit of Buddhism. Surrounded by deep silence, visitors can calm their minds on the temple grounds. Temple lodgings offer an excellent opportunity to experience the simple, traditional lifestyle of Buddhist monks.

The temple also has a coffee shop with a covered veranda overlooking the gardens. A communal bathhouse offers indoor and open-air baths using hot spring water. There is also a museum.
