Omaruyama Park (Omaruyama Kōen)

Omaruyama Park is a popular spot for cherry blossoms in Sakura City. The park entrance is next to the Kitsuregawa Government Building in Sakura City, and the entire mountain area beyond it is known as Omaruyama Park.

The park sits beside Kitsuregawa Castle, said to have been built in 1186 by a man named Gorō Shioya. Today, the area is maintained as a park with fine views. Kitsuregawa Castle was also known in the past as Okuragasaki Castle and Kuragasaki Castle.

Within Omaruyama Park, visitors can stroll along a walking path on the Kitsuregawa branch side. The area around the path is rich in greenery and dotted with a variety of flowers. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms, mountain azaleas, and Japanese kerria.

Attractions in Omaruyama Park

Kitsuregawa Castle

In 1186, Gorō Shioya built Kitsuregawa Castle, renamed the area Kitsuregawa, and became the founder of the Kitsuregawa Shioya family. After that, the castle lord changed to the Kitsuregawa family. In 1870, prior to the abolition of the domain, the Kitsuregawa clan returned its fief to the new government, and Kitsuregawa Castle was abandoned as well.

Today, the ruins of Kitsuregawa Castle are maintained as Omaruyama Park, and the moats and remains from that era are still preserved.

Kitsuregawa Jinya

Kitsuregawa Jinya was built near Kitsuregawa Castle in 1573 by Ashikaga Yoriuji (of the Kitsuregawa family). It served as the domain office of the Kitsuregawa Domain until the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, but it burned down in 1876 and no remains are left.

The former site is now the Kitsuregawa Government Building in Sakura City—which also serves as the entrance to Omaruyama Park.

Kitsuregawa Sky Tower

Kitsuregawa Sky Tower is a facility that opened in 1995 and stands about 49.5 meters tall. Its observatory is at a height of 40 meters; because the tower is on the mountain, it has long been a popular viewpoint with outstanding scenery.
