Cherry Blossom Season at Takato Castle Park

Takato Castle Ruins Park is reputedly one of the three best locations to see cherry blossoms in Japan, along with Hirosaki Castle and Yoshinoyama. The park is located on a hill in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture, about 60 kilometers south of Matsumoto. Around 1,500 cherry trees of the pink-tinged Kohigan variety spread across the park grounds, creating outstanding springtime views.

A cherry blossom festival is held annually—usually for the entire month of April—when many festival stalls line the area around the park. During the peak viewing period (typically mid to late April), illuminations are held nightly from sunset until 22:00.

Takato Castle Park Highlights

Today, little remains of the original Takato Castle beyond some stone foundations; the few structures within the park are additions from the post-feudal era.

Near the north gate stands Takatokaku, the park’s largest building, constructed in the 1930s as a community center. The two-story building is Showa-period architecture, blending local and Western influences, with a wooden structure and a red-tiled roof. It now serves as a place for locals to gather and for travelers to take a break.

At the center of the park is Ounkyo, a gently arched bridge known as one of the park’s finest cherry blossom viewing spots. Taikoyagura, a uniquely shaped drum tower, sits on the park’s western side.

From around the drum tower, looking west, visitors can enjoy clear views of the town below the hill and the Central Alps in the distance. At the park’s southern end is the Shinshu Takato Art Museum, which hosts temporary exhibitions across a range of art forms. Several stone monuments throughout the park commemorate popular local figures or memorable poems.
