Close to the landmark Kongobuji Buddhist temple on Mount Kōya, stands this elegant 13th-century temple with rooms and ornate gardens. Fukuchiin, founded by Daishi Kukai in the 7th year of Konin (816 AD), is a shukubo (Temple Lodging). This accommodation facility is only for Buddhist temple pilgrims and tourists. Shukubo is different from normal ryokans or hotels. Visitors stay inside the temple compounds, and enter into the sprit of Buddhism. Vistiors can calm their mind in the temple grounds surrounded by thick silence. Temple lodgings offer an excellent chance to get a taste of the simple, traditional lifestyle of Buddhist monks.
The temple offers a coffee shop with a covered veranda and views over the gardens. A communal bathhouse offers indoor and open-air baths with hot spring water. There's also a museum.
